Bagnall Lodge Luxury Self-Catering.

Carlingford, Cooley Peninsula.

A visitor to the peninsula in 1846 described one James O’Hanlon, a direct descendent of the O’Hanlon’s, Lords of Orier in Co. Armagh, as;

‘the most extensive landed proprietor of this district and the one who much adds to the influence this property gives him, by his admirable mode of managing it. His land is easily distinguished by its superiority, resulting from skilful cultivation.’

Local lore has it as a land holding with an Irish statute acre for everyday of the year.
When James, who described himself at the Devon commission in 1844 as ‘an attorney and a farmer of considerable quantity of land at Mount Bagnall’, decided to build his seat, he selected the perfect spot on the south facing plain at the base of the Cooley Mountains, sheltered in the scoop of Dundalk Bay.

Passing behind the high walls of Mount Bagnall farm is to recapture something of the history of that model farm in the extensive range of converted stone buildings (the original house was lost in the civil war). Described by Special Places to Stay as ‘democratic’ the stone buildings are scattered over the four acre site. We have a theory that there alignment on the ground echoes the surrounding three peaks of Slieve na gLoc, Slieve Foy, and Paddy’s Top.

Bagnall Lodge originally a building to house the extensive O’Hanlon cattle herd was described by one over awed visitor viewing it in its original state as a ‘cathedral to bovinity’.
Now converted, we offer these two glorious and highly individual four bed roomed houses for self-catering.
